In her last couple of performances (Closer and Garden State) she seemed very self conscious and like she was 'trying' to be the character instead of just being the character. That said she's still intriguing to me whenever she's on screen and she has plenty of time to right the ship."Where are we going? And what am I doing in this hand basket?"

grown-up and failing. Closer and the hit movie are failed attempts at making her persona "tough" or adult.
She'll never make it 'cause she doesn't have the adult presence and waif-hood doesn't go far. Also, have you really listened to her voice?
It's hard to because it's so t i n y and unemotive: she can't talk, to put it bluntly. She may have done better in the silent era.
