In Reply to: Amidst the sea of complete mediocrity, the "Restoration" is a small island of hope posted by Victor Khomenko on January 22, 2006 at 18:06:46:
Downey and Neill are wonderful in it, as is David Thewlis. The costumes and settings are fabulous, indeed they are almost like another character in the film. Despite a tiny budget, this has to be one of the most ravishingly beautiful films on DVD.I'm not thrilled with Meg Ryan's casting, but I don't hold it against the movie. Harvey Scissorhands, er Weinstein, hacked up some of the plot/scenes in the London plague section but not so badly as to really hurt the film.
Of course, there's also the Purcell & Marais on the soundtrack, which I adore.
The restoration era is of my favorite periods in history. I don't imagine the forthcoming The Libertine (with Johnny Depp) will be anywhere nearly as much fun as Restoration.
