Well, he indicates that he will attend her wedding. That's meant (in the movie) to be a positive thing.

... but it shows how much he has lost in his life and how seperated he has been from his true feelings. Whether or not this is meant to indicate that this is because he has never really admitted his homosexuality (maybe bi-sexuality) to himself is not clear as it has cost him as much with his wife.
Thinking for a second, perhaps this is all a criticism of the strong silent type of male figure so common in old style westerns an perhaps common in extreme rural areas. Perhaps of the emotional repression from which American men have traditionally suffered (remember where Jack's father-in-law says something about boys needing to watch football).
