I am a Malick fan, and I was disappointed.I thoroughly enjoyed Malick's The Thin Red Line, and wish it would be releaesed in a longer, director's cut. I never tire of that movie.
I plan to watch Malick's earlier works, Days of Heaven and Badlands.
I was so looking forward to The New World, since I particularly like "historic epic" movies. It was beautiful to look at but soooo slow and meandering. The characters were poorly developed, and the plot was "tension."
For movies which portray the clash of cultures--European vs. Native American--I far prefer "Blackrobe." It is everything that The New World is not.
I hope that the DVD release of The New World will redeem it, but I don't see how it can. I am also skeptical that the 191-minute director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven can salvage that movie. It was slightly enjoyable, but doesn't compare to R. Scott's better works (e.g., Blackhawk Down).
