clinical despair and despondency despite the best efforts of a caring husband and a delightful daughter.
I'd give this a film a "B," though it's hard to analyze why. I particularly didn't like the female lead and, by making the mother-in-law such a shrew and the husband such a saint, I couldn't be unaware of the gross manipulations by the director. The pace was even, too even, and the predictability of the story wouldn't be out of place in a Greek drama.
Still... it has that Fassbinder magic: through some strange magic, you begin to care for the woman and despise how humans (by implication in ALL cases) take advantage of the weak.
Still, I can only recommend it for film buffs and Fassbinder fans, specifically.
