screening of an anticipated film. The darkening of the theater, the rising of the music, the silencing of the chatter... and then, the brilliant explosion of light.
Yes, human beings can be difficult to put up with for those used to solitude and absolute quiet. Remember that in the days of the Globe, Shakespeare play attendees often had raucous parties, drunken louts screaming away, commonly holding forth at performances.
Operas, we are told, also were affairs where much chatter and socializing occurred in the "Golden Age."
How antiseptic and cold we wish our society to become (ok, I draw the line at cell phone calls...).
Follow Ups:
..I like the allusion to Shakespeare.
A dear friend of mine, a huge German (now passed on) loved films, especially opening nights with big queues.
He'd get real wound up & gleefully arrive at the cinema.
Due to his size, he'd usually make his way up to the front of the queue with little problem and with a lot of laughter from everyone, somehow.
I still get such a big kick out the moments the lights dim and the film starts....
