I watched this classic again last night and came away even more convinced that Ethan Edwards, the John Wayne character, is the father of at least of the younger girls. Wayne himself alluded to this (see "Trivia" on the IMDB section of the film).

I have to say I haven't seen the film for some years, but, its tricky to explain his dedication over years if he isn't...
