The decaying seaside town of Long Beach, New York, is basically another character in this story of a veteran cop (Robert De Niro) trying to save his junkie son who has committed a murder and is falsely accused of another, the second one of De Niro's former partner. Francis McDormand lives one flight bnelow De Niro and is his current love interest. This one held my interest throughout and I recommend it. De Niro is heavier here and I wonder if he purposely gained weight for his role.

I agree that it was an excellent flick. You might have added that it was based on a rather famous true story. When the film first came out in the fall of 2002, NPR gave it a lot of coverage.
