>>I am always struck by how young the crew was, most 18 or 19<<I once talked to a guy who had piloted a B-24 in WW2, flying out of North Africa. He'd been in the infamous Ploesti raid. The guys in his crew called him "Pops" because he was the oldest - a geriatric 20. He told me that one of the hardest parts of the job was having to be the responsible grown - up who had to roust the crew out of bed in the morning, tell them when to leave the pub at night, and so forth. I remember what I was like at 20 and I can't imagine having that kind of life and death responsability for eight men at that age.
