The 1950 film is not what we tend to associate with the name Antonioni, even though you will see plenty of familiar elements there, the impossibly De Chirico-esque empty streets and detached characters...It is a marvelous film in its own right, and in some sense immediately brings the memories of Visconti's "Ossessione", or... surprisingly... the Allen's Match Point.
Crime, love, guilt, betrayal - those are timeless issues, and this early film covers them all.
