Duncan Tucker wrote and directed this road movie starring Felicity Huffman and Kevin Zegers. It concerns a California man in the last stages of a sex change (everything but the surgery) who discovers that he has a 17 year old son in New York City. He travels to the Big Apple to bail out the son (who is a petty theif and drug user and dealer) and then they travel by car back to California, the son not aware of the driver's gender or the fact that the driver is his father. Despite the heavy topic there is a lot of subtle good humor and sheer humanity throughout as the two gradually bond and have a series of adventures and encounters anlong the way. Highly recommended although highly unusual.
Follow Ups:
I really enjoyed this film, though felt it chock full of stereotypes- with the exception of Huffman's character, strangely enough. The mother, the sister, the father, the "hippy", even her son were stock stereotypes. The lack of judgemental 'tude between Huffman's character and her son, the acceptance of who they were, was refeshing. Always a great pleasure to watch Graham Greene too!

on this film. I really like films that explore all aspects of humanity.
