I remember hearing some critic say that Capra was so embarrased by IAWL that he bought it and locked it up. That's why you can't find anyone who remembers seeing it before the 60s. Is there any truth to the story?

This was the first and last time that Frank Capra produced, financed, directed and co-wrote one of his films. It cost $37 million but earned only $3 million. This was the reason "no one" saw it. Capra often said it was his favorite of his films.
