...I believe it was filmed in Texas, where I lived at the time.They had a bunch of special ants to use in the film and in transport, all died but a couple. So it's the same two or three ants you see throughout the whole movie.

Well, you do see hords of regular size ants a couple of times. As for the giant ones. they are of course all special effects constructions.
