Whilst this is nominally a family road movie (small kid had to be at a pageant), the family is about as ordinary as the Addams family and although I can't really say much about them without giving away good parts of the movie, they manage to walk the line between being cuddle and bloodcurdling!
Its well written and the acting is good all round even the kid who manages to be convincing even in the pageant.
The only scene below par is welll I'll call it the dance scene and leave you to make up your own minds...
I have a friend who has already been back to see it again as she thinks its so funny and yesterday people were clapping at the end. It went down very well with lots of out loud laughing even fro me and thta's about unheard of!
It also has the most lovely soundtrack and is worth sitting through the credits for the Sufjan Stevens song No Mans Land right at the end.
Follow Ups:
"Little Miss Sunshine" was one of the years favorites for me...
I thought Alan Arkin was fantastic. His spirit loomed over the entire picture. Who else could have choreographed his granddaughter's dance in that style, and it NOT seem perverse!I'm a getting to be a big Kinnear fan. He seems to have a monopoly on this good natured, white-bread who is more complex then meets the eye.
Loved him "The Matador" among other things.
My only small complaint is that Steve Carell seemed so "heterosexual".
