William Holden plays an American born Swedish oil merchant who is tricked by British and American intelligence to spy on various aspects of Germany during World War II. Holden has access to Germany since Sweden was neutral at the time. He reluctantly accepts the role, even though it means disavowing many friends and assiciates, including his best friend, a Jew. Over time Holden meets a fellow spy, a married woman he becomes attracted to, his own marriage having failed over his (faux) pro-Nazi stance. Lili Palmer stars as the love interest and Hugh Griffiths is Holden's British intelligence handler. This is based on a true story and is voice over narrated by the Holden character. I have always found it an absorbing film. In the opening credits, the cast is identified as to nationality. The DVD opens up the original mono sound into 5.1.
