Ok, skipping, etc., is a form of wearing out, but is not a gradual degradation in the same way an LP is.

Skipping is caused when the laser cannot read the pits, simply. This can be caused by scratches or various other forms of deterioration. DVDs are more susceptible to this because of the smaller pit size compared to CD.
