You've got a good one in Lady in the Lake. It's one of my favorites. As for Out of the Past I'm reminded of what Roger Ebert wrote in his review of 200 Cigarettes. He said there were guns in Out of the Past but the real hostility came when Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas smoked at each other. When Robert Mitchum exhaled at a guy, the guy ducked out of the way.
Follow Ups:
when the innocent girl tells Bob Mitchum that the femme fatale "can't be all bad, nobody is" and Bob laconically replies "She comes closest."
