I think tin's recommendation was based on his appreciation of the social aspect, albeit very clumsily covered, of the Cache.
All Haneke films I know score very low in the artistic department, and are extremely pretentious, as you stated.

Michael Haneke admits to setting out to provoke the audience with this film, and the subject is horrific, I can even see the pretentious quality.
I could understand not liking it for those reasons but still think it is very well made and I like the games Haneke plays.
