Posted by rico (A) on January 19, 2007 at 13:55:22Humphrey Bogart was not the first or even the second choice for the lead male role here and when the film was released in 1941 got second billing to Ida Lupino (later changed when Bogie became a bigger star). This is generally regarded as the role that made Bogart a star. He plays a hardened convict sprung by mob money to assist with a daring robbery. He becomes torn between his love (unrequited) for a a crippled young woman and her family and tougher and harder Lupino, who falls hard for him. The story (written by W.R. Burnett from his novel with assistance from John Huston) shifts between these two plot lines until the climactic ending in the mountains. Bogart's own dog is featured throughout. Well acted and very enjoyable. The DVD contains a short program about the making of the feature
