First off, I want to thank the member who posted the info about the Janus 50 year collection of art films. That's where I first began considering viewing some old foreign films. Next, I should thank the person who gave us a gift subscription to Netflix for Christmas.Pepe Le Moko was a surprise. Excellent French film about a bank robber/ jewel thief holed up in the Casbah of Algiers. Jean Gabin was cast perfectly as the Robin Hood of the Casbah. Everyone loved him.
An even better French film of the same year, 1937, is Grand Illusion. Again Gabin stars. Truly great film, first one, I think, about a prison break.
Finally, Rules of the Game, another French film of the era. A very good film. Excellent, really, but I didn't like it as well as the previous. All of the above have a theme about the ruling class or upper class. That theme is most emphasized in this last one.
