Paths of Glory in 5.1? Hmmmm.... Colorized, perhaps? But I am with you on this one - I too would pick up a couple
of good transfers.However... it is easy to get too preoccupied with Kibrick. In reality his works are already pretty well presented - quality wise, and relatively speaking. I am not saying they are perfect, far from it, but when you look at what is available from many other *truly great* directors - you want to cry.
You take early Bunuel, De Sica, Bergman, and many others, and often you are lucky if you can see anything at all. Add the subs to that and... why, white on white, of course...
So perhaps instead of keeping polishing the tired Kibrick trinkets to perfection, wouldn't it be nice if someone took many old gems and at least brought them up to passably watchable standards?
Speaking as someone who has not turned his 5.1 on in months...
And before someone starts hurling missles at me for that "trinket" statement, let me assure you that you would have to struggle to pry two or three ot his movies from my cold body.
Follow Ups:
I think Criterion are doing an excellent job of releasing classic cinema."Autumn Sonata" is due for release soon. I have not seen it, but Bergman directing Bergman?- I can't wait- As is "The Magic Flute".
Yes, I am well aware of them, and thank God for their effort, but their whole catalog is one page long and prices are up to $40... I would not mind The Seventh Seal, but man, I can rent two dozen films for that price!
