My favorite Fellini is a toss up between "8 1/2" and "La Strada" --- obviously for different reasons.
You're right about the payoff from multiple viewings. It seems the little intricate details start to stand out once you're familiar with the overall story. I've watched the opening sequence countless times, and I seem to see something new each viewing, even in the first few minutes...
