I mean, let's be honest. Year after year almost everyone denigrates the new movies, right? But this past year produced a gratifying number of highly watchable films (albeit not each one for everyone's taste). My list appears in two sections, those I've seen myself and those for which there was critical (or Academy -- which is different) attention. Between the two I assert there are maybe twice as many good films as in many, many previous years.
In no order of preference (and I'm sure I've forgotten some):
I.
Children of Men
The Lives of Others
Half Nelson
Apocalypto
Tristram Shandy
Blood Diamond
The Departed
Casino Royale
Cars
The Illusionist
A Scanner Darkly
Thank You for Smoking
Superman ReturnsII.
Babble
A Convenient Untruth
(OK, OK...)
Borat
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
United 93
Water
The Last King of Scotland
Little Miss Sunshine
Notes on a Scandal
The Queen
A Prairie Home Companion
X-Men: The Last Stand
Pan's Labyrinth
The Devil Wears Prada
Volver
Dreamgirls (just not for me...)clark
Follow Ups:
you listed seem to be Indy productions(I am an Indy fan). I read somewhere a survey that only about 35% of movie goers saw all the nominated films this year. Just an observation. Maybe Hollywood still needs to wake up.
...what you meant by "all the nominated films" is up for question. Myself, I saw only one of the BP nominees and only two each of the ten BA and the ten BSA nominees -- but The Queen and Notes on a Scandal on my list for DVD. For me that is a record underperformance, but I simply wasn't interested in most of the films. A few even I boycotted!
