This was a film that I would call a second tier film. Which is not a shot, I too thought was it was good. I suspect that this film was more avant garde in its time. 1957, a time in America when many women never began careers, instead opting to pursue being housewives. Here was a woman who had a career, then gave up that career, but not the ambition. Turns out she is more ambitious than her husband, which in 1957 America must have been a shot off the bow.
