I finally finally saw this magnificent film when it unexpectedly opened here on outer Cape Cod, having miossed it duiring its previous local theatrical performances. WOW! What a magnificent movie. Easily the best film of 2006. Acting, direction, story, and music all superb. I was spellbound and will spring for the DVD when it is available. I cannot say too much about this great film. The entire cast deserves a standing ovation.
Follow Ups:
Its a film where the "names" have been prepared to be seen in a less flattering light. Its not a vehicle for them. Dench as the sour lonely old woman with a huge case of schadenfreud (how do you spell that???) and Blanchett as selfish and as for screwing a kid....
But really eevryone in it is superb and I think this depth of talent helps it to rise above the rest.
A "small" film if you will, dealing with essentially a private matter, but a very very good film.
I could have played the part of the kid.
