Actually the US expected very much to go to war with the Japs.The attack on P.H. must have been one of the most successful raids during the war. Even though they were the 'bad guys' in your eyes, you gotta give them credit for that. Lets face it, the Japs beat the shit outta everyone in Asia/Pasific in the beginning. Hadn't the US cracked the Jap codes they probably wouldn't know to intercept and surprise the Japs at Midway, and the Jap carriers and aircraft might just have done in the US carriers instead, in which case the war most likely would have dragged out even longer. Or more likely there'd be used more nukes when they finally were ready.
There is a really interesting book called "the Code Book" which details the cracking of the Japanese military code.
