In Reply to: It's 4 a.m. and I just got back from screening Pearl Harbor..... posted by Chris Garrett on May 24, 2001 at 04:23:03:
Having been in the military and seen combat I have a unique perspective. The battle seens were quite good. Some of the best I've seen in a movie. The explosions are all fine and dandy but it's the details that usually end up pissing me off when it comes to war flicks. In that respect, I think Pearl Harbor did a very good job. Of course the movie is centered on a fictional love affair. While I thought it was well done, this is probably where most people will have a fit. Ultimately I really enjoyed the movie and felt they really did a spectacular job. I also feel they showed a very generous amount of respect for the Japanese military and their motivations. As long as it was it didn't feel too long, and in some respects a little more may not have hurt.
I've read a lot of complaints by critics but what do you expect? They are critics after all. This movie has been hyped for several months and with it being about a real life event, it's going to get scrutinized. Personally I had a pretty good time and wouldn't mind seeing it again. The dogfight scenes were awesome! All of the cast did a great job. A few performances could be considered a little cliche' but what do you expect? By design, anything having having to do with the military is going to be repetitive and boring and cliche'.
So there.
