"Bird" is okay, but there really isn't much story or insight into his death. I think this is a problem with a lot of films about musicians who died young. Instead, try "'Round Midnight" with Dexter Gordon (hey, a musician who can act) as a once-great jazz musician fighting alcoholism and his reputation. It has decent music by Herbie Hancock and the sound (on my laserdisc) was actually natural and helped transport you into those nightclubs in Paris.
