My wife, 9 year old son and I attended a crowded, enthusiastic matinee yesterday-my son is a confirmed "Pottermanic" who has read all the books, and my wife is just starting on the 3rd book. This is superior entertainment, and the veteran British supporting cast really made the film for me, particularly Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane & Alan Rickman (does anyone play a better villain)? Nifty cameos from John Cleese and John Hurt, too. I realize Chris Columbus isn't exactly an autuer, but the film is beautifully paced, and the effects don't overwhelm the story-a rarity in big budget films nowadays, IMO. Worth seeing even if you haven't, like me, read the book (it's on my nightstand now, though!)
Follow Ups:
I saw the movie on Saturday with my kids and concur with you. They loved it, it was very similar to the book only leaving out some details. It didn't seem overly long either
