In Reply to: "Donnie Darko" one of the best this year... posted by darkmoebius on January 06, 2002 at 13:23:06:
I've seen it, though I don't share your enthusiasm. I just didn't find the story all that grabbing, and a far cry from American Beauty in my book. And far from Mulholland Drive as well, and you already know how I feel about that one :-)Call me superficial, but my favorite line was: "What's a f**k-ass?"
I would have liked to see some more dysfunctional family situations and less of Donnie's "fantasy".
Oh, I do really like the Donnie Darko movie poster. Very disturbing and very representative of the film.
You know what? I'll wait for the DVD and watch it again before I finalize my judgment. I did that with Thin Red Line and now I absolutely love it. Strange, huh?
Follow Ups:
I prefer "Donnie Darko" over "Mulholland" by miles in nearly every aspect, especially running time. For some reason, it really seemed to grab me, although it could have been my full belly of sushi, sake, and Sapporo :o)For one thing, I'm an insufferable Scifi geek and anything with wormhole/timetravel in it is bound to strike a note. Also, I found many of the most awkward high school moments to be painfully realistic. But, you are right in saying they should have taken more time to establish Donnie and his screwed up family life.
Anyway, I'll email you with my thoughts on what the actualk storyline was.
You both seemed to like the American Beauty.Wanna form a triangle now?
