In Reply to: The 10 greatest film performances by an actress posted by danj on January 27, 2002 at 00:21:57:
Just off the top of my head:
Viven Leigh - A Streetcar Named Desire
Anna Magnani - The Rose Tattoo
Katherine Hepburn - Long Day's Journey into Night
Elizabeth Taylor - Whos Afraid of Virginia Wolf
Glenda Jackson - Elizabeth R (television)
Meryl Streep - Sophie's Choice & Silkwood
Sissy Spacek - Coal Miner's Daughter
Vanessa Redgrave - Playing for Time (television)
Hellen Mirren - Prime Suspect (television)
Follow Ups:
A fine list. I give a big yes to Anna Magnani. The Rose Tattoo is an excellent film and Magnani is, to put it mildly, absolutely splendid. My wife, who generally dislikes that type of film (she likes Mel Gibson, Sean Connery, Bruce Willis, action flicks and little else), watched it with me when she was home sick. She kept asking me who that Italian woman was. When I told her she said she was one of the best actresses she had ever seen. That was a rare compliment.
I'd seen the film more than 25 years before and still remembered it. Magnani had an effortless style. She was powerful but never gave the impression she was "acting." And Burt Lancaster turned in one of his finest performances, although I think his turns in The Rainmaker and Birdman of Alcatraz are his best, by a tiny margin.
Speaking of THE RAINMAKER...Kathryn Hepburn was mighty powerful, too. Just another great performance for her. She had a career full of great performances.
