Also, we probably should include the epic TV mini-series "Lonsome Dove." This would also be a good topic for expansion into silent cinema and even serials!

"Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro," even "Ran" and "Throne of Blood" (may not be Kurasawa) essentially "westerns" with samurai instead of cowboys...

Yes. An excellent film.
If I were to choose the all-time best television western LONESOME DOVE would be the certain choice.
