If you watch the Special Features on the Fight Club disc (also directed by Fincher), you see the making of a couple of shots. One of them is the zoom into the trashcan scene and I had no idea how they did it. At first I thought it was with a fiber optic cam, but the whole thing was created as a CG.

It's a guess, but I'll stick with it.
