Unless the dvd has both the P&S AND widescreen, I don't think you can force a widescreen to become P&S...so in that sense it is a software issue...Does your 4x3 tv do the "squeeze" trick? If not, then you aren't able to use the progressive output of the Sony, and you must set up the dvd player as playing on a 4x3 tv.
That being done, again, you can't force a widescreen (matted or letter boxed) image to be P&S. You might be able to "zoom" the image to fill up more of your screen, then you lose resolution.
Knowing that a P&S image contains less picture information, why would you want that versus the full widescreen image?
