...to my HDTV CRT by having unshielded magnets near enough to cause the familiar colour distortion? I am trying to find a location for my speakers (magnets are ~20,000 gauss !!!) by observing the effects on my monitor. I fear that I might screw something up.Regards, Blair

Yes, on some tubes it is possible to do irreparable damage. But you would have to take very strong magnet and stick it right on the screen. This is the rule: if distortion is so big that part of the picture is missing or part of the screen is black, you risk permanent damage. If picture is just little distorted and discolorated, there is no rick of permament damage.
