My old GE TV would recognize/default the composite input if I had no S-video source active. I suppose that you have tried this?

Yes mate,if the S-video cable is in then that is what it wants to pay attention to.
I think I will need a 'comp to S' converter and an inline 2 to 1 S-video switcher.
