I see what you're saying but that woudl require me to adjust the volume separately on two components and try to match levels by ear, right...a little annoying, which is why I wanted to simplify wth just a receiver.
My new 2 channel preamp has no processor loop or such so my question was can I run a set of speaker wires from the receievr to all my speakers as well as run a set of speaker cables from my 2 channel amp to the front two speakers (which are still connected to the receiver)?

as long as you dont't accidentally leave the power on the receiver and integrated simultaneously on

They can be used to select between amps ("backwards") instead of between speakers i.e. two sources instead of two speakers. There are many brands of these, from cheap (like RS) to quite expensive. Something in the middle is the one from Bryston. You can also quite easily make a decent one with some good switches (like Shallco).
Without a switch the operating amp will be feeding into the output of the non-operating amp, and the n-o amp will be loading the operating amp inappropriately: not good.
