They can be used to select between amps ("backwards") instead of between speakers i.e. two sources instead of two speakers. There are many brands of these, from cheap (like RS) to quite expensive. Something in the middle is the one from Bryston. You can also quite easily make a decent one with some good switches (like Shallco).Without a switch the operating amp will be feeding into the output of the non-operating amp, and the n-o amp will be loading the operating amp inappropriately: not good.
