I like Panasonic, I own a 7670 that works well.I just bought a Philips 1010BPH that is on clearance at onecall for $110-120, a real bargain. I prefer the Panasonic but the SVHS-ET is nice to use once in a while. Picture quality is better on the Panasonic, of course.
If you want to stick with JVC might I suggest the professional series the JVC HRS-1TU (I think) lists for about $350 and is available for about $250 and gets rid of a lot of the features for the same price range. It should be better built than the comparable consumer range which is a little too loaded with bells and whistles for my taste.
