I heard the Sony VA555ES and the Denon AVC 1SE in different setups. I preferred the Sony sound, being more on the warm side than the Denon, which tends to be a little bright sometimes, especially in comparison to the Sony ES.And I doubted the validity of my comparison more (unfair because of difference in setup, room, etc) when I found out that the Denon sells for around $3000 in the dealer, while the Sony ES goes for $1200 only!
Is it just that Sony's status as an "electronic giant" which makes them capable of lower prices compared to equal-quality offerings from competition? Or is the Denon way above the league of the Sony ES model?
