According to the assessment of the RP56 given in the "Secrets of Home Theater and HiFi" article linked to below (second to the last player reviewed, above the pricey Kenwood changer at the bottom of the page), the DVD-1600 has at least one huge benefit over it as a DVD-Video player: it has aspect-ratio control. So, if you're playing a disc with 4:3 content on a television that insists on converting all component video input to 16:9, it can handle it.
I too am considering it--I'm vacillating between the DVD-1600 and Yamaha's DVD-C920/DV-C6480 (they seem to be the same player--the spec sheet and features pages of their manuals are identical). I can find the Denon for $420 and shipping and the Yamaha for about $100 more (shipping included). The Yamaha is a 5-disc changer with pretty much the same features. I'm mostly interested in getting a player with the Sage/Faroudja DCDi chip, and they both feature it.
Right now, I'm kind of leaning toward the Denon.
