If you compare a regular VHS tape and an S-VHS one, the S-VHS tape has a hole in the shell that the VHS shell lacks. You have to drill a similar sized hole in the VHS shell in that same spot, keeping in mind that the plastic shavings are a potential problem and that you may want to vacuum them out or something. An S-VHS machine that can record on a standard VHS tape must not have the hole detector that regular S-VHS players have, so the hole in the shell becomes a moot point.

You can achieve pretty good performance doing this if the VHS tape is of relatively high quality, but I just don't think it's worth it myself. If you do a large amount of S-VHS archiving, perhaps it can be justified.
