First, vulcanman, it sounds like you're saying HDCD sounds better than SACD. Is this a correct assumption on my part?Next, let me reiterate my original question: My primary question was whether or not there is a $200 player out there that does DVD better than the Sony NS500V (again, I'm using a 2 channel setup)?
Finally, it's not that I don't hear a difference between SACD and CD. Some of what I've heard on SACD sounds great; Definitely better than CD sound. Unfortunately, some of it sounds pretty bad. Overall, the improvement is not so dramatic in my system (Audio Analog Puccini integrated driving Reference 3A MM De Capos--far from Radio Shack quality stuff) that I can easily envision spending tons of money on an SACD library, especially when so many of the currently available titles do not interest me.
Follow Ups:
Hi Jonathan:By no means I am saying that HDCD is better than anything else. In fact, I stay away from saying things that sound so definitive ... because nothing in life is definitive ... except eventual death ... and that too might change if the Germans get a chance :-)
I have owned the SCD-C333ES ... and just sold it because I did not care much for the sound. I went and bought a Toshiba SD-9200 .. its a DVD-A player that also plays HDCD.
About two years ago I had owned the SD-5109 ... which also played HDCD ... but overall the player lacked the warmth of an audiophile box. So I eventually sold it.
The SD-9200 is an absolutely wonderful piece of equipment. It makes my Mirage M3Si sing ... when driven thru McCormack / Aragon electronics.
Whats even more shocking the sound quality of the HDCD discs ... Tower Records has HDCD disks for around $7.99 !! and if you asked me which is the best bang for the buck (price / sonics ratio) ... the HDCD beats all else hands down !!
And dont forget the 24/96 Chesky DVD discs ... they are very revealing as well.
As I said ... its all in the care and dedication of the recording engineer ... the Chesky discs sound good because they CARE ! The Sony SACD discs (not all) sound crappy 'cause ...
Anyways ... if you have good electronics ... you should try the SD-9200 ... you will see what I mean.
Bye.
