A simple question: What should I buy for $200 or under if my main consideration is durability (i.e., should go a good 5-10 years without problems.) The unit is only for use as video playback through a 20-inch TV -- no surround sound or audio capabilities needed now. I'd even take a slightly worse picture if the unit would last longer than the one with the superior picture. I know the no-names are a mistake, but what brand and unit would you recommend to your mother if she were in the same position?

If you get 10 years out of that cheap a DVD player then you are lucky indeed. That said Toshiba seems to be making decent machines.
