whenever my new Sony STR-de985 detects an audio signal it flashes on the display PCM 48KHz I have searched the manual several times and am unable to find any reference to what PCM is what it does how to adjust it or if I should even care. Thanks in advancePs I replaced a Denon avr 1200 with this unit and am very pleased I dont usually buy Sony but I got a great deal at the sony family store (friend who works at sony) and I am totally impressed with this unit.
Follow Ups:
I belive that it stands for Pulse Code Modulation and is the same as CD format except 48kHz instead of 44.1kHz sampling rate.
Actually PCM encoding may have any sampling frequency, the popular ones for audio applications are 44.1kHZ, 48k,50k,88.2k,96k,176.4k,192k,etc. The CD 'Redbook' standard specifies 44.1k 16 bit encoding, meaning that 44,100 samples are taken each second, and that each sample is a binary word 16 bits long. DVD-Audio discs also store audio data as PCM, but Super Audio CD uses a 1 bit method called DSD which is a variant of Sigma-Delta Modulation encoding, which is rather different from PCM.
