Actually PCM encoding may have any sampling frequency, the popular ones for audio applications are 44.1kHZ, 48k,50k,88.2k,96k,176.4k,192k,etc. The CD 'Redbook' standard specifies 44.1k 16 bit encoding,meaning that 44,100 samples are taken each second, and that each sample is a binary word 16 bits long. DVD-Audio discs also store audio data as PCM, but Super Audio CD uses a 1 bit method called DSD which is a variant of Sigma-Delta Modulation encoding, which is rather different from PCM.
