Has anyone had experience with some of the analog surround sound processors that provide bass management capable of functioning in the analog domain? For example, I'm considering one of the low cost multi-channel Sony SACD players. My understanding is that if I want bass management, my Onkyo Dolby surround receiver won't be able to operate as intended, since the SACD deck wouldn't provide a digital output. - So, I'm considering the Outlaw Audio bass management unit, at around $350 for a unit tailored to my Maggie speakers. (I'm aware that I won't have control of speaker spacing, etc., but the Outlaw unit is supposed to mix the low-mid and low frequencies optimally for the Maggie main, center, and surround speakers.)My question is whether I would be able to achieve somewhat similar results with my conventional surround receiver (an Onkyo 676) that includes "large speaker-small speaker" controls. I would, of course, be feeding analog line-level inputs to the receiver instead of a digital signal to the optical input. - It's probably somewhat important that the low bass be diverted from the Maggie center and surround speakers that are not capable of reproducing it.
Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. - Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I'm a novice relative to surround sound.Jim

The "Large/Small" speaker controls (selecting "small" sends low frequencies to the subwoofer instead of the mains; this is what bass managment is) won't work with SACD or DVDA. The cheapest option for Bass Management it to use the crossover in your subwoofer (assuming you have one). This may only cover the Front Left and Right speakers, but I understand most SACD recordings are 2 channel (I don't have one, but this is what I've read).Beyond this, I am aware of only two external Bass Management systems: The Outlaw you mentioned is the less expensive. The other is M&K (check out www.mksound.com).
The other reply you received is not correct.Simply selecting "small" for your speaker size is NOT bass managment. This only stops low frequencies from going to your speakers. What you then have is little or no bass at all! The Outlaw unit (B&K makes one also) mixes all the low frequencies that were meant for your speakers and sends them to the subwoofer. If you have full range speakers (those capable of reproducing low frequencies) bass managment is not a problem. If you dont have an SACD or DVD-A player yet you might want to wait. Theres a good bet that the next generation players will have this capability built in.
