My trusty old VR3200 can't be fixed (needs an RF modulator). I guess 15 years is pretty good service. I haven't shopped for a VCR in 15 years, so I'd appreciate input on shopping points for an economical replacement in the current market. We mainly want it for playback of the VHS library, a very occasional recording of a broadcast, and reasonable stereo sound quality. Our VCR use is now pretty light.
I know they're not building bullet-proof models like the 35 lb. VR3200 anymore. I see many major brand 4-head units for under $200 and much less for the budget stuff. 15 years ago, there was a huge range of performance quality in VCRs. Are there any big discriminators today? Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
I think consumer VCRs are largely a disposible item, nowadays. Even the JVC SVHS models are build rather cheaply, IMO. Sony makes a model like "V51" or "v52" for about a $100/street that has 60 second rewind. That is kind of nice. Also the tuner isn't too bad.I think JVC, Marantz, and Mitsubishi make some nicer models in the $500+ category. But that's kind of expensive for the VCR, IMHO.
The days of the vcr are numbered. DVD has pushed them to the budget end of the market. They can be bought for $80 Canadian (or about $40 US). Even JVC Super VHS can be bought for a couple of hundred. Basically I would try and find the most expensive machine you can & assume that will only last a few years. The very cheap ones will likely give only a couple of years of service.
