In Reply to: Is there a "best" brand of blank VHS video tape? posted by Sean on July 06, 2002 at 15:39:02:
... there can be variations in batches and in the various categories within those brands. I have some older Maxells which should have disintegrated by now but give pics as good as EHG (Extra High Grade) TDK. I also have some "TV" TDK which is tops but a batch of HS TDK which is ordinary. The biggest recent disappointing purchase was SONY - very ordinary and not cheap. So yes, there are differences. My latest purchase was EHG TDK and, using an S-VHS machine (not s-video recording) get results only marginally inferior to the original broadcast and better than quite a few direct broadcasts where video quality (off satellite) shows up the large variations in the quality of the original broadcast tape. Note we are projecting on to a 112 inch wide screen so quality variations are magnified.
Follow Ups:
I would have to agree that EHG TDK are, to paraphrase an rcrump quote, "all tapes are crappy, some are just less crappy than others", not too bad...I like them, reasonable price, and they seem to last not badly over the years. They do the job fine, virtually no dropouts. I would expect that the comparable formulation/priced Maxell are just as good.
