In Reply to: How To Compare The Denon 4802 with Outlaw Preamp 955 posted by etap on July 17, 2002 at 17:55:49:
I have a Denon 4800 (with Revel M20's) and I have made the same direct comparison twice (in my home). I have also tried many other "discount" pre/pros and for reasons that still surprise me, the Denon wins hands-down for theater and 2-channel audio.I imagine I will eventually upgrade to separates to take advantage of the latest processing formats but I don't think there will be any substantial benefits until some of the less expensive pre/pros incorporate balanced inputs.
Another option is to add an external amplifier to your current receiver. Denon's 4800 processor is very strong and there are several "discount" amps on the market that could really make your equipment sing. I would check out Outlaw, ATI and my personal favorite (and soon to incorporate balanced outputs) Parasound.
